Studio portrait of 4348 Sergeant (Sgt) Francis Collins, 14th Battalion of Yackandandah, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, as Private Collins he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 29 December 1915. On 11 April 1917, during fierce fighting near Noreuil, France, during the First Bullecourt battle, Sgt Collins, aged 40, was captured by the Germans and died on 12 April 1917 while a prisoner of war. He is buried in the Vis-En-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt, France.
