Description
Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (later Major) George Matson Nicholas, 24th Battalion of Trafalgar, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripedes (A14) on 10 May 1915. On 14 November 1916, he was killed in action near Flers, France, aged 29. He is buried in the AIF Burial Ground, Flers, France. Before his death, as Captain Nicholas, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his "ability and skill in handling his company in the attack (Pozieres) on 4th and 5th of August 1916".
