Studio portrait of 572 Sergeant (later Warrant Officer Class 1) James Thomas Richards, 39th Battalion of Warrenheip, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27 May 1916. On 8 June 1917, he was killed in action near Messines Ridge, Belgium, aged 20. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
