Informal group portrait of 11 American sailors, United States Navy radio operators stationed at HMAS Harman. Identified left to right: Zierow, Montgomery, Stroop, Swift, John Stir, Tom Togletson, Radioman 2nd Class (RM2C) John Allen Frazier and Girard. During the Second World War HMAS Harman provided communications services for ships of the allied navies working in the Pacific region. During this time, the first servicewomen began work as telegraphers, forming the basis of the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) which was formed in 1941.
