Studio portrait of 2304 Private John Lawrence Costello, 30th Battalion, of Scone, NSW. A teacher prior to enlisting on 9 October 1915, he embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Orsova on 11 March 1916. He was killed in action on 4 September 1916 at Pozieres, France, aged 39.
