Studio portrait of Captain George Guyatt Gardiner, 13th Battalion, of Darlinghurst, NSW. A civil servant prior to enlisting on 1 November 1914, he embarked from Melbourne, Vic, aboard HMAT Ulysses on 22 December 1914. On 27 April 1915, he was wounded on Gallipoli by a gun shot wound to the ankle, and after recovering went on to serve in France. During fighting at Bullecourt he was taken prisoner on 9 April 1917. He was a prisoner of war (POW) in Karlsruhe POW camp, and later interned in Holzminden. He was repatriated to England in December 1918 and returned to Australia in 1919.
