Description

Original grave marker of Lieutenant Morton Reginald Sandland, 18th Reinforcements, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, of Kooringa, SA. A farmer prior to enlisting on 14 August 1914, he was assigned regimental number 191 as a Private (Pte) with A Squadron, 3rd Light Horse Regiment (3LHR). Pte Sandland embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Port Lincoln on 22 October 1914. On 21 January 1916, after suffering from illness, it was thought a change back to Australia would help him to recover. He again embarked from Adelaide with the 18th Reinforcements, 3LHR, aboard HMAT Katuna on 23 June 1916. After attending an officers course in early 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant on 9 May 1917. Lt Sandland was killed in action on 31 October 1917, in Palestine. At the head of each grave a gum tree has been planted.
