Description
Studio portrait of 4811 Corporal (previously Private) Francis Gerald Houston, 57th (previously 7th) Battalion of Bendigo, Victoria. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 7 March 1916. On 7 October 1916, he was wounded in action at Flers, France. He was transferred to the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, London, England for treatment. Following his convalescence and on the eve of returning to France, he contracted congestion of the lungs and died on 8 December 1916 at Opera Hotel, Bow Street, London, aged 20. He is buried in Kensal Green (All Souls) Cemetery, United Kingdom. Cpl Houston was one of four brothers who served in the First World War.
