Collection relating to the service of 420351 Warrant Officer Norman (Norrie) Macdonald (RAAF), 156 Squadron RAF, 1941-1946, England, German. Collection consists of a flying log book, letters, telegrams, various documents and certificates, including McDonald's prisoner-of-war identification certificate from Stalag IVB. Collection also contains one letter written in 1943 by NX7525 Corporal Kevin Halse, 2/1 Battalion, to Norman Macdonald.

History / Summary

Flight Sergeant (later Warrant Officer) Norman 'Norrie' Macdonald was the only crew member who survived the crash of JB474 Lancaster III near Fallingbostel in Germany on 2 December 1943. Almost all the crew members were Australians, though flying with a RAF squadron. Macdonald became a prisoner-of-war and was interned in Stalag IVB at Muhlberg, Saxony. This collections contains thirty letters and letter-cards Macdonald wrote from the camp to his wife Evelyn who was living in Glasgow during the war.
