Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Leslie Cecil Maygar VC, VD, of Dean Station, Kilmore, Vic. Lt Maygar was the first Victorian to be awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). He won his VC at Geelhoutboom in South Africa on 23 November 1901 serving with the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles. This portrait was taken after 1903 and before 1914 as Lt Maygar is wearing the 1903 Commonwealth pattern full dress uniform displaying his VC and Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps. (A near identical black and white image is held as H12606, an identical hand tinted colour image is held as P01285.001 and a black and white cropped version published in "They Dared Mightily" is held as P01285.003), other similar images can be found at P05481.005, P05481.006, P05481.007, and P05481.008.
