Studio portrait of 1034 Private (Pte) Charles James (Charlie) Jakeman, C Company, 18th Battalion, of Woollahra, NSW (originally Hereford, England). A teamster prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 June 1915. Pte Jakeman was killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 22 August 1915, aged 23. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Pte Jakeman's brother, 64 Pte George Harold Jakeman, served with the 20th Battalion at Gallipoli and later was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in 1916 for bravery in the field at the Bridoux Salient, France. At the time was serving with the Australian Army Medical Corps, attached to the 20th Battalion. On 13 April 1919 he returned to Australia in the 5th Field Ambulance with the rank of Lance Corporal.
