Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX58344 Lieutenant Albert Gordon Cowden, 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion, Sandakan and Kuching, Borneo, c. 1942-1945.
Collection consists of one English Dictionary containing loose pages from a Japanese phrasebook, compiled by Lieutenant Cowden. In the margins of the pages of the dictionary and phrasebook, Cowden wrote a variety of recipes and cooking notes.
Cowden served with the 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion in Malaya, and was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese when Singapore fell in February 1942. He was part of “E” Force, a group of prisoners that was taken to Sandakan prisoner of war camp at Borneo. He was later moved to Kuching prisoner of war camp.
