Commemorative medalet : First visit of the Commonwealth Fleet to Sydney, 4 October 1913
Circular bronze medalet commemorating the first visit of the Commonwealth fleet to Sydney on 4 October 1913. The obverse shows the battle cruiser HMAS Australia with the Sydney shoreline in the background and the words 'OCT.4 1913' below. The reverse is marked in raised letters with the words 'TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST VISIT OF THE COMMONWEALTH FLEET TO SYDNEY'. A small hole has been made at the top of the medalet through which a metal suspension ring is threaded.
On 4 October 1913 huge crowds lined Sydney Harbour to see the arrival of Australia’s new naval fleet, comprising battle cruiser HMAS Australia, light cruisers HMAS Melbourne, HMAS Sydney and HMAS Encounter, and destroyers HMAS Yarra, HMAS Parramatta and HMAS Warrego. To commemorate the occasion all school children in New South Wales were granted a holiday and were issued with this medalet.
