Description

Outdoor portrait of a group of patients at the British Military Hospital, possibly at Alexandria, Egypt in hospital uniform, relaxing in the garden. Identified in the front on the right is 108 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) George Fullard Hamilton, 1st Battalion from Newtown, NSW. A 22 year old electrical mechanic prior to enlisting on 17 August 1914, he embarked as a Private with A Company from Sydney on 18 October 1914 aboard HMAT Afric. After being promoted to L Cpl on 22 April 1915, he was wounded at Gallipoli on 25 April and evacuated for medical treatment and for rest at the Convalescent Camp at Alexandria before returning to Gallipoli on 16 May 1915. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 5 June 1915 and his name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial with others who have no known grave.
