Description

The SGM is a gas operated, belt fed, automatic weapon firing a 7.62mm round. The weapon is made from ordnance steel and has a blued finish. It has a long stroke piston located under the barrel. The quick change barrel is locked by a side mounted bolt that locks into the wall of the receiver. The SGM has a longitudinally fluted barrel. The SGM machine gun uses a non-disintegrating link belt. The fire control unit consists of a set of spade grips attached to the rear of the receiver, a safety switch and a push-button trigger. The charging handle is located at the rear of the receiver under the spade grips to the right side of the receiver. The front sights consist of a protected post. The rear sights consist of a graduated ladder sight and tangent post sight.

Markings the receiver cover is marked with '236' within a triangle, under which is '57' and a Chinese character. Under this is the serial number: 220 844

History / Summary

This weapon was one of a number of weapons taken by Australian special operations forces serving in Afghanistan in 2006. The weapons were originally secured in Camp Russell to be destroyed either on the firing range or as targets by the appropriate authorities.
