Description

Album of 62 pages, containing black and white photographs taken during the voyage of HMS Pearl to the South Pacific in the years 1870 - 1880. The ship was captained by Commodore James Graham Goodenough, from 1873 to 1875, who played a key role in negotiations which led to the Deed of Cessation being signed between Fiji and Britain. While in the New Hebrides in 1875, the crew of HMS Pearl were set upon by natives at Santa Cruz and Goodenough, and two crewmen died from arrow wounds. In the ensuing period, HMS Pearl, as flagship of the Australian station, sailed to New Zealand, South America, Malta, and Japan. John Thomas Weatherlake was HMS Pearl's wardroom steward and photographed many of the ports, local scenery, people and daily life of the places visited by the ship.
