La Francaise pendant la Grande Guerre [The French lady during the Great War]
Single leaf compostition depicting a French blonde woman in a royal blue, black fur-trimmed coat with matching dress, a black muff and black hat with white flower. Her feet and body move to her left, toward a British officer, while she gazes over right shoulder, toward a French soldier, holding her right hand up to her face in a gesture of tentativeness. The faint outline of trees in the background suggest this is a street scene. An inscription in the lower right corner indicates that the scene is situated in Bauzemont, a village situated in Luneville, the Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, in the north-east of France. The caption underneath the illustration reads 'Entrè les deux mon coeur balance [Between the two my heart balances]', which suggests that her heart torn between her two suitors - the French soldier and the British officer.
