Studio portrait of 566 Private (later Corporal) John Joseph Carmody, 9th (later 49th) Battalion, of Redbank, Qld. Son of Michael Joseph and Ellen Mary Carmody, of Townsville, Qld. A railway guard prior to enlisting, he embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Omrah (A5) on 24 September 1914. He was killed in action on 7 September 1917 at Messines Ridge, Belgium, aged 27. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
