Description
This sketchbook is from Streeton's first official war artist commission to France 14 May-13 August 1918 where he worked mainly around the Somme battlefields. The sketchbook comprises 13 pages, one loose sheet, with 16 drawings of landscapes, encampments, horses, ruined buildings, officer's quarters, chateaus, headquarters, ambulances and hospitals. Places depicted include St Gratien, La Houssoye, Coisy and Abbeville. Sketch on the inside cover and a sketch on the inside back cover of stretcher bearers. The sketchbook is bound in a green-grey card. Some pages have been excised.
