Description

Studio portrait of Non Commissioned Officers from the 54th Battalion. Identified, back row left to right is 1973, Corporal (Cpl) Leslie Henry Robinson, of Minore via Dubbo, NSW; 1997, Sergeant (Sgt) Joseph Gladstone Baxter Smith of Dubbo, New South Wales; 2016 Sgt Loudon Whitmill of Parkes, NSW; 1972 Acting Sergeant Locksley Stuart Fisher Robinson of Minore via Dubbo, NSW; 1996 Sgt Allan Albert Stuart of Dubbo; 1969 Cpl James Gordon Wentworth Peacock of Gulargambone, NSW. Cpl Robinson, Cpl Stuart and Sgt Whitmill were killed during the fighting at Polygon Wood, possibly when a shell landed amongst a group of 15 men before the Polygon Wood Butte on the 26 September 1917. Cpl Whitmill is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery at Zillebeke, and Sgt Stuart at New Irish Farm Cemetery at St Jean-Les-Ypres. According to his Red Cross Wounded and Missing file, Cpl Robinson was buried with five others near the Butte, however the cross marking the grave was later destroyed, and his remains were never found.
