Description
Group portrait of Australian prisoners of war (POW) at Stammlager XXA at Thorn, Poland. Amongst the group are men of the 5th Australian General Hospital who were captured in Greece after hospital staff were ordered to remain behind to treat wounded allied POW following the evacuation. Identified is NX31913 Private (Pte) Robert Albert Gray of Neville, NSW (front row, third from the right). Pte Gray enlisted on 18 June 1940 and following his capture spent another eight months in Greece before being transferred to Stammlager XXA camp at Thorn, Poland. He returned to Australia in 1944. Pte Gray sent the photograph from the camp to to Mrs R Strong of Neville, NSW.
