A group portrait of the 9th Reinforcements of the 7th Light Horse Regiment at Liverpool Camp prior to embarkation. Of the 53 which appear in the 9th Reinforcement group on the 7th light Horse Regiment Unit Embarkation Roll, only 39 men appear in the portrait. Identified are: 1255 Trooper (Tpr) Reginald Melville of Trundle, NSW (seated, front row, far right); 1229 Trooper (Tpr) Albert (Abert) Baxter, of Whitton, NSW (second row, third from the left); Sergeant Eustance Swain, of Leichhardt, NSW (front row, second from left); Lieutenant Harold Johnson, of Coogee, NSW (front row, centre); and Corporal William Bowden, of Rockdale, NSW (front row, third from right). Possibly identified is 1243 Tpr Arthur Fairbairn (third row, forth from the right) and 1244 Tpr Albert Fairbairn (third row, third from the left), who were brothers from Forbes, NSW. Both Baxter and Bowden were veterans of the Boer War (1899-1902), as evidenced by the ribbon of the Queens South Africa Medal above their left breast pocket. Baxter served one year with the 6th Imperial (NSW) Bushman, nine months with the Bechuanaland Rifles, and six months with the Natal Regiment. Corporal Bowden served one and a half years with the 3rd Imperial (NSW) Bushmen, six months with Doyle’s Australian Scouts, two years with the Northern Transvaal Volunteer Rifles, and the Legion of Frontiersmen. Trooper, later Corporal, Baxter was killed when his patrol was attacked by Turkish forces near El Magim in Palestine on 16 May 1917, and is buried at Gaza War Cemetery. Note the man in the front row is holding a set of semaphore flags used for signalling.
