Studio portrait of 6443 Private (Pte) John Stonehouse, 24 Battalion, of Colac, Vic. Pte Stonehouse enlisted on 7 October 1916 and embarked for overseas service with the 18th Reinforcements, 24 Battalion, from Port Melbourne on 23 November 1916. Pte Stonehouse was killed in action on 9 October 1917 when, as part of D Company, he was wounded by an explosive bullet at Broodseinde Ridge. According to his Red Cross Wounded and Missing file, Pte Stonehouse was buried that night near the Menin Gate; he was later reburied at the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
