Studio portrait of 470 Private (Pte) William Hampstead Field, 43rd Battalion. A native of Clare, South Australia, Field had been a stockman, manager of a pastoral property, and a Mounted Police Constable prior to the war. He embarked for service overseas from Adelaide with C Company aboard HMAT Afric (A19) on 9 June 1916, leaving behind his wife and unborn son. Pte Field was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 31 July 1917, aged 29. Pte Field's son, William Henry (Billy) Field, later served in the Second World War and was attached to 13 Squadron RAAF. He was listed as missing in the Celebes on 19 January 1942, aged 26.
