Studio portrait of 2878 Private (Pte) Lester Douglas Crossley, 4th Battalion. A farmer and station hand of Booligal, NSW, before he enlisted in September 1915, Pte Crossley embarked for training in Egypt on HMAT Euripides with the 6th Reinforcements, 19th Battalion, on 2 November 1915. In February 1916 he was taken on strength of 4th Battalion, soon before sailing for France and service on the Western Front. Pte Crossley was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 24 July 1916. His remains were not recovered, and his name appears on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, Villers Bretonneux, France.
