Description
Studio portrait of 2650 Private (Pte) William Hindley, 4th Battalion, of Paddington, New South Wales (originally of Macclesfield, Cheshire, England). A cabinet maker prior to enlistment, and with previous service in the 10th Hussars, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements of the 19th Battalion on HMAT Euripides on 2 November 1915. In February 1916 he was taken on strength with the 4th Battalion and the battalion arrived in France on 30 March 1916. A signaller with B Company, Pte Hindley was killed in action when hit by a shell on 24 July 1916 in the vicinity of Pozieres. His name is recorded on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial for those with no known grave.
