Description

Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Walter Fenwick Matthews, of Jamestown, SA. As a Quartermaster Sergeant with the 3th Field Artillery Brigade, Matthews embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Medic on 20 October 1914. After seeing service at Gallipoli, Matthews served in France throughout late 1916 and early 1917 with the 3rd and then 13th Field Artillery Brigades. He was promoted to 2nd Lt in March 1916 and to Lieutenant in December of that year. Lt Matthews was killed in action near Bapaume on 27 May 1917 and is buried at Bancourt British Cemetery outside of Bapaume.
