Studio portrait of 2521 Private (Pte) Clarence Leslie Bird, 34th Battalion, of Maitland, NSW. A farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements aboard SS Napier on 17 November 1916. On 12 October 1917, Pte Bird was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, aged 19. Pte Bird has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
