Studio portrait of 18171 Leading Stoker (Ldg Sto) John Thomas Henry (Jack) Norton, HMAS Sydney, of Redfern, NSW. Ldg Sto Norton enlisted on 8 February 1927, and joined the crew of HMAS Sydney [II] on 4 February 1939. On 20 November 1941 he was killed in action, when the Sydney was sunk off the coast of Western Australia by the German raider Kormoran, with the loss of all crew. He was 35 years old. Jack Norton's younger brother, 18110 Able Seaman William Frederick Cecil Norton, also enlisted in February 1927 and was also lost with the Sydney.
