Description
Studio portrait of 16245 Sapper (Spr) William Young, Field Company Engineers, of Surry Hills, NSW. Spr Young was a miner before enlisting on 6 October 1916. He was probably of Chinese heritage and his name when he was born may have been William Qing Yen. Spr Young embarked from Sydney with the November Reinforcements on HMAT Suevic on 11 November 1916. He was taken on strength of the 2nd Field Company Australian Engineers on 25 April 1917. He was killed on 16 September 1918: he was serving tea to an officer, for whom he acted as batman, when a shell hit their dugout.
