Description

Studio portrait of 254 Private (Pte) William James Clasohm, 43rd Battalion of Balhannah, SA. Pte Clasohm served for three and a half years volunteer service in the 74th Battalion, Citizens Military Forces (CMF) before enlisting on 10 January 1916. He left Australia for England as an original member of the 43rd Battalion in June 1916. Arriving in France in September 1916, Pte Clasohm was killed during the attack on Broodseinde on 4 October 1917. Three weeks later his younger brother, 6798 Pte Stanley Edward Clasohm left Australia for France, and later died of shell wounds received in action whilst serving with the 48th Battalion in 1918, aged 19 (see P06871.002).
