Studio portrait of 2828 Private (Pte) George Alexander Waters, a butcher of Caulfield Vic, who enlisted on 19 July 1915. Pte Waters embarked at Melbourne with the 6th Reinforcements to the 24th Battalion on board HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915 bound for Egypt. He left Egypt bound for on 21 March 1916. After he arrived in France he was assigned for training and eventually joined the 24th Battalion on 5 August 1916. The 24th Battalion was in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres, France, and, on 2 September 1916 he was reported wounded, missing. A Court of Enquiry was convened on 18 October 1917 and his status was changed to killed in action. Pte Waters has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
