Later transferring to the 4th Machine Gun Company, Dvr Jones was among a group of NCOs and men recommended for award in recognition of their coolness under fire, determination and resource during operations near Gueudecourt, France in November-December 1916. Working at night under constant shell-fire, they were responsible for transporting mules up to battalion headquarters. Dvr Jones was awarded the Military Medal on 19 February 1917. While on leave in England, Dvr Jones was admitted to the military hospital at Tidworth, where he died of acute cerebral meningitis on 8 August 1917, aged 26. He was buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery, England.
