Studio portrait of 250641 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Daryl Maxwell Sproule, 77 Squadron, of Hobart, Tas; an articled law clerk prior to enlistment. Flt Lt Sproule was promoted to Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) on 1 August 1943. While on operations over New Britain on 2 August 1943, his Kittyhawk, A29-201, was struck by flak and crash landed on a beach near Lindenhafen. Flt Lt Sproule escaped but was later captured by the Japanese. He was interned as a prisoner of war at Gasmata and executed on 16 August 1943. On 15 August 1943 Sqn Ldr Sproule, aged 25, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
