Informal portrait of 250641 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Daryl Maxwell Sproule, 77 Squadron, of Hobart, Tas. An articled law clerk prior to enlistment, Flt Lt Sproule enlisted in the RAAF in 1940. This portrait may have been taken during training . Flt Lt Sproule was promoted to Squadron Leader in 1943 and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 15 August 1943. On 2 August 1943 Sq Ldr Sproule's Kittyhawk, A29-201, crashed in New Britain and he was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese. He was executed on 16 August 1943. He was 25 years of age.
