Back row, left to right: 39 Signaller (Sig) William Dent (Bill) Penny; 538 Private William Alfred (Bill) Fitch; 27 Sig Arthur Ernest Emmerson; 32 Sig William Lewis. Front row: 36 Sig William Henry McDonough; 37 Sig Albert Henry "Arthur" Patton; 23 Sig Stanley Glassford (Stan) Barr; and 22 Sig John (Jack) Brewis. On 10 November 1915 the eight men had embarked on HMAT Ascanius from Melbourne with the 29th Battalion, the seven signallers with the Headquarters Signals, and Pte Fitch in B Company of the battalion. He later transferred to the 5th Divisional Signal Company and was killed in action on 25 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, Belgium.
