Studio portrait of 3388 Private (Pte) John Stuart Dyce, 56th Battalion, of Appin, NSW. A farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Anchises on 24 January 1917. Later transferring to the 36th Battalion, he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 17 October 1917, aged 26. Pte Dyce has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. This portrait was among those sought by the Trustees of the Mitchell Library from May 1918, following a call for relatives of soldiers to forward photographs to the Crown Studios, Sydney, for copying. The reproduced portraits were mounted on cards that recorded the personal and service details of the soldier from information supplied by the donor. The 1668 portraits of servicemen collected by the trustees are now held by the State Library of NSW.
