Studio portrait of 407768 Aircraftman (later Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt)) Ronald James Hill, No. 18 Squadron RAAF, of Edwardstown, SA. An employee of the news and mail office before the war, Hill enlisted on 4 January 1941. Flt Sgt Hill was killed during a flying battle over Darwin on 5 April 1943, aged 26. He was buried at Adelaide River War Cemetery, SA. Flt Sgt Hill's father, 6571 Private Harry Rogers Hill, 27th Battalion, had served during the First World War and was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917. His brother, 24227 Engine Room Artificer 4th Class Robert Henry Hill, died at sea when the HMAS Sydney was torpedoed and sunk on 19 November 1941.
