Studio portrait of the Dowde family, featuring the posthumous addition of Private (Pte) Daniel Robert Dowde in uniform at centre. Pte Dowd is depicted with his parents, Daniel and Janet (Jessie) Dowde, and sisters Nell (left) and Jean. 5049 Pte Daniel Robert Dowde, 22nd Battalion, enlisted under the alias Henry F Lovell on 6 March 1916. He embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ayrshire on 3 July 1916. Shortly after arriving in England Pte Dowde was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza, and later severe pneumonia. Discharged to duty in February 1917, he proceeded with his unit to France in March. Pte Dowde was reported wounded and missing on 3 May 1917, and following a court of inquiry later the same year he was officially listed as killed in action on 3 May 1917, aged 27.
