Studio portrait of NX6758 Corporal (Cpl) Arthur Appel, 2/1 Headquarters Guard Battalion, of Belmore, NSW. The portrait of Cpl Appel is in a vignette with a decorative border with flags, standards, and a crown; beneath are vignetted portraits of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, flanked by a lion and a unicorn. A scroll bears the inscription, "Palestine 1941". Cpl Appel was a boilermaker before he enlisted on 25 Oct 1939 at Newtown, NSW. He died of wounds in New Guinea on 24 September 1943, at the age of 39.
