Haist, Clifford (Private, b.1918 - d.1994)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX30261 Private Clifford Haist, 2/12 Field Ambulance, Thailand and Singapore, c 1942-1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one postcard and one letter with original envelope from Private Haist to his sister, Miss Betty Haist (later, Mrs Betty Davies). In his letter to his sister, written after his release from a prisoner of war camp, Private Haist writes about his hope to be home soon and his expectations about how he will find his hometown. He also responds to family news.
Private Clifford Haist enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 12 June 1940. He was taken on strength to 2/12 Field Ambulance and trained in Darwin, Northern Territory, before embarking for overseas service in Timor. In February 1942, Private Haist was captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. He was interned in a prisoner of war camp in Thailand. Private Haist returned to Australia via Singapore in late 1945, and was discharged on 1 February 1946.
