Description
Studio portrait of three Australian soldiers in England. Identified at far left is 4793 Private (Pte) George Alexander "Joe" Kerr, 23rd Battalion, of Echuca, Vic. A grocer prior to enlistment, Pte Kerr embarked with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916. Shortly after his battalion moved to the Ypres Sector in Belgium, Pte Kerr was killed in action on 22 September 1917, aged 22. He has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. The soldier on the right is also from the 23rd Battalion; but he and the seated soldier are unidentified.
