Studio portrait of 3128A Private (Pte) John Joseph Marquis, 5th Pioneer Battalion, of Kattanning, WA. Born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, he was one of three brothers to enlist with the 1st AIF in July 1916. Pte Marquis embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Fremantle aboard HMAT Argyllshire on 9 November 1916. Later transferring to the 28th Battalion, Pte Marquis was killed in action in France on 1 June 1918. One of his brothers serving in the same battalion, 5893 Pte Frederick William Marquis, died of wounds later that year in France on 4 September 1918. The only brother to survive the war, 3127 Sapper James Randolph Marquis, 7th Field Company Engineers, returned to Australia in September 1919.
