Studio portrait of 5893 Private (Pte) Frederick William Marquis, 28th Battalion, of Kattanning, WA. Born at Durham, England, he was one of three brothers to enlist with the 1st AIF in July 1916. Pte Marquis embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Fremanlte aboard HMAT Suffolk on 13 October 1916. While serving in France he was wounded in action on 2 September 1918, and admitted to the 6th Australian Field Ambulance suffering from shell wounds to the face, head and neck. Shortly afterwards Pte Marquis was transferred to the 5th Casualty Clearing Station, where he died on the 4 September as a result of his wounds, aged 22. One of his brothers serving with the same battalion, 3128A Pte John Joseph Marquis, was killed in action in France on 1 June 1918. The only brother to survive the war, 3127 Sapper James Randolph Marquis, 7th Field Company Engineers, returned to Australia in September 1919.
