Studio portrait of 2216 Private (Pte) Edgar Albert Maxwell, 50th Battalion, of Saddleworth, SA. A farmer and blacksmith before enlisting in May 1916, Pte Maxwell left Australia for England with the 4th Reinforcements in August 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in February 1916. He was killed in action during the 50th Battalion's attack on Noreuil on 2 April 1917, aged 25. Pte Maxwell's younger brother, Bombardier Norman Basil Maxwell, 11th Brigade Field Artillery, died from appendicitis on 24 December 1916, aged 22 (see P07739.001).
