Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Benno Charles Lehmann, 11th Battalion, of East Fremantle, WA. A marine engineer and a member of the Australian Garrison Artillery before enlisting in September 1915, Lt Lehmann left Australia for Egypt with the 14th Reinforcements in February 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front the following month. After transferring to the 3rd Machine Gun Company in January 1917, Lt Lehman was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for his actions during the Second Battle of Bullecourt for "[bringing] his gun into account at great personal risk. On seeing his gun in danger of being captured he led a bombing attack, and though twice wounded, remained until the enemy was repulsed". Wounded in the thigh and buttock, Lt Lehmann was repatriated to the 3rd General Field Hospital, rejoining his unit in July 1917. Lt Lehmann was slightly wounded during the 3rd Machine Gun Company's attack on Glencorse Wood on the 21 September 1917. His wounds had just been seen to at a Dressing Station at a captured pillbox when he and his Batman were hit by a German whiz-bang shell, killing Lt Lehmann instantly. Aged 38 at the time of his death, he was buried nearby, but the location of his grave was lost in later fighting, and consequently he has no known grave. Another image of Lt Benno Lehmann is held at P06534.002.
