Description
Studio portrait of VX147944 Private (Pte) Gordon Stanley Brown, 58/59 Battalion, of Shepparton, Victoria. A Managing Grocer, Brown was the husband of Elma Betsey Ross and the father of three-year old Beverley at the time of his enlistment on 14 April 1942. He was killed in action, aged 32, on 5 June 1945 on Bougainville and is buried at Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery. In a letter to his widow, the chaplain of the battalion, Captain Henry Thomas Shotton wrote "He (Brown) was one of the finest fellows in the band, quieter than some, but very dependable and thoughtful. He was always willing to help me at Sunday evening services."
