Outdoor portrait of 136 Private (Pte) Herbert Lesley Mead, 36th Battalion, of Cobargo NSW. A labourer before enlisting on 7 December 1915, Pte Mead embarked from Sydney on HMAT Beltana on 13 May 1916 with A Company. He was killed in action on 11 June 1917, when he was hit by a shell while holding the line near Messines. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial.
