Sketchbook containing 56 pages of drawings from his service during the First World War
- Scrapbook leaf with two sketches and inscription recto, and one verso
Description
A fold-out panoramic landscape sketch, depicting fields seemingly untouched by the war. Inscription associated with this sketch reads: "What the Germans [surrendered] - for just a little while in 1915 - This is a view from the spot where the Hun dug in on Hill 109 outside Villers-Bretonneux. From here all the country to Amiens is under observation and had the Hun been able to establish his position here, Amiens must have fallen - He was driven from this position by the diggers, often holding it about 24 hours."
