Fundraising badge : YMCA Snapshots From Home League
Description
Round enamelled brass badge with brooch fitting to reverse. The design features the words 'Snapshots From Home League' around the circumference on a white enamel background with the YMCA badge and letters in red and blue enamel in the centre.
History / Summary
Enamelled brass badge produced to promote the YMCA's 'Snapshots from Home League' of Australia, which aimed to encourage amateur (and professional) photographers to provide images of soldier's loved ones at home. The YMCA, which accompanied Australian troops close to the front line, produced forms on which troops could request an image of their family. Amateur photographers were then contacted in the relevant local regions in Australia who arranged to meet families, take portraits and were encouraged to provide free processing of the images and free prints. The programme was advertised in newspapers, early photographic magazines and photographic shops as well as YMCA depots; see ARTV05498 for an example of one of the posters which were produced to promote the League's activities. The scheme was initiated in England and soon spread throughout the British Empire. It was so successful that it was repeated during the Second World War.
